Teacher Tip #13

My kids are nuts.  Bonkers.  Off the wall crazy!  They're creative, boisterous, vivacious and wild.  They are full of life and zany and free.  Although erratic and at times quite unsystematic they are also often incredibly sweet.  They're funky.  They're spunky.  They're all around peculiar.  Some would call them spastic or eccentric and, well, I wouldn't not agree with them.  In fact, I'd even add that they are screwy, sporadic, silly oddballs.  Huston, the cheese has slid off the cracker.  Some days they require me to pour out all of my energy, attention and strength just to keep up with them and at the end of the day I'm completely drained to the core.

This sounds horrible, no doubt, but truly it's not.  Somehow, my cup is always full when they come in completely recharged the next morning and I find myself ready to pour it all out for them again.  Does this mean that I'm some crazy Super Woman of a teacher?  No.  In fact...I'll go ahead and say it...Heck No!  Some days my cup is a Big Gulp from 7 Eleven and I can drench the kids with energy and life.  Other days my cup is a thimble sized colander full of holes and I seem to go completely bone dry before lunch.  But regardless of size and permanence, the cups are still filled before each morning begins.   I think this, above all teaching knowledge and ability, is my proof that this is where I'm called to be.  So here's my tip for you...

Teacher Tip #13  At the end of the day when the last kid has scuttled from the room and you've picked up your empty cup from the floor, take a moment to reflect on the small victories of that chaotic day.  And drip by drip, you'll watch your cup fill until it overflows.
